Psalm 86

A prayer of David.¹ Hear me, LORD, and answer me,
   for I am poor and needy.


² Guard my life, for I am faithful to you;
   save your servant who trusts in you.
   You are my God; ³ have mercy on me, Lord,
   for I call to you all day long.


⁴ Bring joy to your servant, Lord,
   for I put my trust in you.

 ⁵ You, Lord, are forgiving and good,
   abounding in love to all who call to you.


⁶ Hear my prayer, LORD;
   listen to my cry for mercy.


⁷ When I am in distress, I call to you,
   because you answer me.

 ⁸ Among the gods there is none like you, Lord;
   no deeds can compare with yours.


⁹ All the nations you have made
   will come and worship before you, Lord;
   they will bring glory to your name.


¹⁰ For you are great and do marvelous deeds;
   you alone are God.

 ¹¹ Teach me your way, LORD,
   that I may rely on your faithfulness;
give me an undivided heart,
   that I may fear your name.


¹² I will praise you, Lord my God, with all my heart;
   I will glorify your name forever.


¹³ For great is your love toward me;
   you have delivered me from the depths,
   from the realm of the dead.

 ¹⁴ Arrogant foes are attacking me, O God;
   ruthless people are trying to kill me—
   they have no regard for you.


¹⁵ But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God,
   slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. 


¹⁶ Turn to me and have mercy on me;
   show your strength in behalf of your servant;
save me, because I serve you
   just as my mother did.


¹⁷ Give me a sign of your goodness,
   that my enemies may see it and be put to shame,
   for you, LORD, have helped me and comforted me.

1 Samuel 26: 2-23

1 Samuel 26:2-23

 ² So Saul went down to the Desert of Ziph, with his three thousand select Israelite troops, to search there for David. ³Saul made his camp beside the road on the hill of Hakilah facing Jeshimon, but David stayed in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul had followed him there, ⁴ he sent out scouts and learned that Saul had definitely arrived.

 ⁵ Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw where Saul and Abner son of Ner, the commander of the army, had lain down. Saul was lying inside the camp, with the army encamped around him.

 ⁶ David then asked Ahimelek the Hittite and Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, “Who will go down into the camp with me to Saul?”
   “I’ll go with you,” said Abishai.

 ⁷ So David and Abishai went to the army by night, and there was Saul, lying asleep inside the camp with his spear stuck in the ground near his head. Abner and the soldiers were lying around him.

 ⁸ Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t strike him twice.”

 ⁹ But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the LORD’s anointed and be guiltless? ¹⁰ As surely as the LORD lives,” he said, “the LORD himself will strike him, or his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. ¹¹ But the LORD forbid that I should lay a hand on the LORD’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.”

 ¹² So David took the spear and water jug near Saul’s head, and they left. No one saw or knew about it, nor did anyone wake up. They were all sleeping, because the LORD had put them into a deep sleep.

 ¹³ Then David crossed over to the other side and stood on top of the hill some distance away; there was a wide space between them. ¹⁴ He called out to the army and to Abner son of Ner, “Aren’t you going to answer me, Abner?”
   Abner replied, “Who are you who calls to the king?”

 ¹⁵ David said, “You’re a man, aren’t you? And who is like you in Israel? Why didn’t you guard your lord the king? Someone came to destroy your lord the king. ¹⁶ What you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, you and your men must die, because you did not guard your master, the LORD’s anointed. Look around you. Where are the king’s spear and water jug that were near his head?”

 ¹⁷ Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is that your voice, David my son?”
   David replied, “Yes it is, my lord the king.” ¹⁸ And he added, “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done, and what wrong am I guilty of? ¹⁹ Now let my lord the king listen to his servant’s words. If the LORD has incited you against me, then may he accept an offering. If, however, people have done it, may they be cursed before the LORD! They have driven me today from my share in the LORD’s inheritance and have said, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ ²⁰ Now do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. The king of Israel has come out to look for a flea—as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

 ²¹ Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Come back, David my son. Because you considered my life precious today, I will not try to harm you again. Surely I have acted like a fool and have been terribly wrong.”

 ²² “Here is the king’s spear,” David answered. “Let one of your young men come over and get it. ²³ The LORD rewards everyone for their righteousness and faithfulness. The LORD delivered you into my hands today, but I would not lay a hand on the LORD’s anointed.

1 Corinthians 13

 ¹ If I speak in the tongues^[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. ²If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. ³ If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,^[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

⁴ Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. ⁵ It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ⁶ Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. ⁷ It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

 ⁸ Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. ⁹ For we know in part and we prophesy in part, ¹⁰ but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. ¹¹ When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. ¹² For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

 ¹³ And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Psalm 143

A psalm of David. ¹ LORD, hear my prayer,
   listen to my cry for mercy;
in your faithfulness and righteousness
   come to my relief.
² Do not bring your servant into judgment,
   for no one living is righteous before you.
³ The enemy pursues me,
   he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in the darkness
   like those long dead.
⁴ So my spirit grows faint within me;
   my heart within me is dismayed.
⁵ I remember the days of long ago;
   I meditate on all your works
   and consider what your hands have done.
⁶ I spread out my hands to you;
   I thirst for you like a parched land.^[a]
 7 Answer me quickly, LORD;
   my spirit fails.
Do not hide your face from me
   or I will be like those who go down to the pit.
⁸ Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
   for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
   for to you I entrust my life.
⁹ Rescue me from my enemies, LORD,
   for I hide myself in you.
¹⁰ Teach me to do your will,
   for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
   lead me on level ground.
 ¹¹ For your name’s sake, LORD, preserve my life;

¹ In you, LORD, I have taken refuge;

   let me never be put to shame;

   deliver me in your righteousness.

² Turn your ear to me,

   come quickly to my rescue;

be my rock of refuge,

   a strong fortress to save me.

³ Since you are my rock and my fortress,

   for the sake of your name lead and guide me.

⁴ Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,

   for you are my refuge.

⁵ Into your hands I commit my spirit;

   deliver me, LORD, my faithful God.

 ⁶ I hate those who cling to worthless idols;

   as for me, I trust in the LORD.

⁷ I will be glad and rejoice in your love,

   for you saw my affliction

   and knew the anguish of my soul.

⁸ You have not given me into the hands of the enemy

   but have set my feet in a spacious place.

 ⁹ Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am in distress;

   my eyes grow weak with sorrow,

   my soul and body with grief.

¹⁰ My life is consumed by anguish

   and my years by groaning;

my strength fails because of my affliction,^[b]

   and my bones grow weak.

   I am the utter contempt of my neighbors

and an object of dread to my closest friends—

   those who see me on the street flee from me.

¹² I am forgotten as though I were dead;

   I have become like broken pottery.

   “Terror on every side!”

They conspire against me

   and plot to take my life.

 ¹⁴ But I trust in you, LORD;

   I say, “You are my God.”

¹⁵ My times are in your hands;

   deliver me from the hands of my enemies,

   from those who pursue me.

¹⁶ Let your face shine on your servant;

   save me in your unfailing love.

¹⁷ Let me not be put to shame, LORD,

   for I have cried out to you;

but let the wicked be put to shame

   and be silent in the realm of the dead.

¹⁸ Let their lying lips be silenced,

   for with pride and contempt

   they speak arrogantly against the righteous.

 ¹⁹ How abundant are the good things

   that you have stored up for those who fear you,

that you bestow in the sight of all,

   on those who take refuge in you.

²⁰ In the shelter of your presence you hide them

   from all human intrigues;

you keep them safe in your dwelling

   from accusing tongues.

 ²¹ Praise be to the LORD,

   for he showed me the wonders of his love

   when I was in a city under siege.

²² In my alarm I said,

   “I am cut off from your sight!”

Yet you heard my cry for mercy

   when I called to you for help.

 ²³ Love the LORD, all his faithful people!

   The LORD preserves those who are true to him,

   but the proud he pays back in full.

²⁴ Be strong and take heart,

   all you who hope in the LORD.
